PENN DUTCH COW CARE

Hubert J Karreman, VMD
Veterinarian

A veterinary business dedicated to providing natural treatments and herd health management services to ecologically motivated dairy farmers in the eastern Lancaster county area. Farmers interested in a more natural approach to treating their cows, intensive graziers, and organic producers are encouraged to call.

Main Goals of PENN DUTCH COW CARE:
  1. To use plant medicines, colostrum-whey products, homeopathic remedies, acupuncture and other natural, alternative treatments for routine and emergency situations (conventional medicines will always be available and may be preferred at times).
  2. To teach farmers easy-to-use, natural approaches that help their cows' health.
  3. To perform standard diagnostic testing (mastitis, reproduction, etc), always offering both alternative and conventional treatment choices.
  4. To generate easy-to-read charts of DHIA information that is important to monitor for trends over time.
  5. To formulate nutrient management plans to best utilize manure as a fertilizer.
  6. To gather information over the long run in order to demonstrate the economic viability of natural methods of dairying to the conventional agricultural sector.

Dr Karreman is a "hands-on" vet in his eleventh year of practice and has experience in:

  1. Providing and promoting alternative treatments for common cow problems
  2. Being available for emergency calls in dairy medicine, surgery and obstetrics
  3. Helping promote the wise use of soil and water resources to ensure cow health
  4. Creating standards of health care for certified organic dairy cows

MISSION STATEMENT

My goal as a veterinarian is to promote environmentally sound methods of dairy farming. I will dedicate my professional knowledge to help farmers use water, soil, pasture and manure resources in ways that create a biologically healthy landscape for dairy cattle and society. In medicine and reproduction, I will primarily use natural approaches instead of only antibiotic and hormonal treatments. In emergency situations, I will use both conventional and non-conventional treatments as needed for the well being of the animal. I will endeavor to coordinate local grassroots efforts with state and national programs to promote sustainable agriculture. I will remain up to date regarding prohibited, regulated and allowed substances for certified organic clients. Additionally, in order to expand my knowledge and deliver new information to clients, I will also attend meetings and classes geared toward achieving the goals stated herein.
